What Is SEO And What Are It's Aims?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. When SEO first appeared on the web it was very simply the task of making your website easier to crawl so that search engines could index your content more easily.
Let us just say at this point that the amount of SEO you NEED to do to achieve the above is very small. Follow the organ grinders advice, not the monkeys. Here is what Google states:
"Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link."
"Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content."
"Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images."
"Make sure that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate."
"Make pages for users, not for search engines."
Notice the last line in particular, yet SEO experts tell you the complete opposite. You will see that the advice and methods we give you on this site go WITH what the search engines themselves recommend.
Follow the advice from the search engines themselves, make it easy for the visitors and you will make it easy for them too, then forget about it! This is what SEO was all about at the beginning. That has now changed somewhat, SEO is now a multi MILLION dollar industry, and sadly for most webmasters, the largest point of focus of their site promotion efforts.
SEO is an industry that is more than happy to take your hard earned money or valuable time with NO guarantees of success.
As for the companies that offer you "GUARANTEED RESULTS". Don't believe their pitch, THEY CAN GUARANTEE YOU NOTHING!!!!
Ouch! that hurt didn't it? But let me back this up with a few facts. Let's take a little look at SEO and why devoting all your time (or worse, money) to it is a BAD idea.
