| Step 6 - Make It Easy For Your Link Partners
This is important! If you do not make it as easy as possible for another webmaster to add their link to your site, or offer you a link exchange, this will drastically reduce the number of links you are offered and your traffic will suffer as a result.
Within the navigation of your links directory there should be a clear place for prospective link partners to add their link. The "add link" details should be separate from the directory itself as your site visitors do not need to see that info. A link in the directory navigation will do the trick, call it "add site" or "add a link".
This should lead to your linking policy (if you use one) and then from your linking policy to a nice clear add link page. On this page you need to offer two sets of info:
Your linking info
It is accepted as standard that the person offering you a link exchange will first add a link to your site. So you need to give them that information. One important point here, most sites use a reciprocal links management program, they NEED THESE DETAILS to add your link to their site first:
- Your Name. Give them your name! Webmaster or Links Manager may make you feel important, but it is not great for creating the good working relationships we are trying to do here.
- Your Main URL you want them to link to... http://www.mysite.com
- The heading of your link text. This will be the clickable link on their site and should be descriptive but short. Example: Quality Discount Clothing By Fred
- Your Site Description. No more than a short paragraph. This will sit on their site underneath your clickable heading.
- Your Email Address. INCLUDE THIS!!!! It amazes us how many webmasters don't. Like we said, most sites use a reciprocal links management program. They will need your email address to contact you if there is something wrong with your link, and their links program may not let them add your link without an email address. If you are worried about spammers getting your email address from your add link page create an image with your email address on it and use that. As long as your partner can see it it will be fine. There is a useful tool for doing that quickly Here (opens in new window)
How They Link to You
Now you need to give them clear instructions on how they can add their link to your site. If you use a program like Reciprocal Links Pro then all this is taken care of within the program.
If you insist on doing this manually then tell them what information you want from them. It should pretty much be the same as the information you gave them above for your site, such as their URL, their link title and so on. Remember to tell them where to send it.
