Problem 2 With SEO - The results, IF you get them, are temporary at best.

We have established that Google and other search engines want to deliver accurate results. It is common sense then that they do not want those results manipulated by the SEO tricks and techniques.

How do they combat SEO manipulation of their results? Very easily, they REGULARLY change how they order their results. I am sure you have heard of "Search Engine Algorithms". In plain English algorithms are the set of rules that determine the order of results for any search term entered into a search engine. Remember the quote "Google's order of results is automatically determined by more than 100 factors." Google (and other search engines) regularly change one or more of those factors to combat the current tricks of the SEO "experts".

In the good old days this didn't happen very often but it DID happen. One of the most famous updates was named "The Florida Update". Google dramatically changed how they ordered their results. All of a sudden sites that had enjoyed first page listings in Google for a long time found themselves on page 43 of the results and their traffic stopped. The SEO world was in uproar, but more importantly, thousands of sites that listened to them were left without traffic.

Since then Google has increased the frequency of the changes to their algorithms. Just like you, Google staff visit the SEO forums to find out how much of their algorithm has been worked out and they look at what techniques are being used to manipulate results. When the SEO people get too close they simply change the algorithms!

So let us draw a common sense conclusion here. Let's assume you find a very good SEO company (and they will be far from cheap), you pay them several hundred (maybe even thousand) dollars and they get you to that coveted first page of results for your chosen search term. Tomorrow Google can, and probably WILL, change how they do things. Just like that, and with no choice in the matter, your site is back on page 15 of results and your traffic stops.

What now? Pay them all over again and hope they can work out the new algorithms?

Maybe you didn't spend the dollars, maybe you spent hundreds of hours doing it yourself and learning all the little tricks. Same result. Stop and think a moment logically. Does it make sense to invest time or money in temporary results? Does it make sense to invest your time or money in results that you have NO control over?

All of a sudden SEO doesn't seem like such a good investment of your time and money, does it? Well, it gets worse, MUCH WORSE! Read on, we haven't finished with SEO yet.
